Arts in Action

Arts in Action is an initial step in the DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum's commitment to shifting the local history narrative from a predominantly white experience to a more inclusive and accurate account.

The narrative for the exhibit is evolving as stories are still being researched, written, and lived. This website will be regularly updated with additional information. We encourage you to please use the "Submit Your Story" tab to share your related experiences.

You are about to enter the Arts in Action website where you will find stories of resilience, hope, and perseverance. Some recollections are of painful experiences and may cause discomfort. The DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum include them because they believe history can – and should – be used to move us forward. Through this project we hope visitors can better understand where we have been, where we are now, and how we can do better.

We hope that this project will continue conversations initiated in the summer of 2020 and contribute to community healing. In The Life of Reason, Spanish-born philosopher George Santayana wrote:

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
